There are many different types of software available to block unwanted sites on your high-speed computer. However there are some very simple ways to block sites that you do not want your kids, or family to go on or have access to. Some very simple commands and a text-editing program are some times all you need to achieve this. However your computer should have Notepad, which is installed, on every windows PC since Windows 3.1. Before beginning this you should know a list of the programs in which you wish to block. To begin you should open a command window and type in “nslookup’. Type in the name of the site you want to send them to when they attempt to visit one of the sites in which you don’t want them to go to. You should find the HOST file located on the computer; on most computers it-s located under the Driver files. Once there double click on the HOST file. Your computer should then ask what program you want to open this file with. You should select browse, then select the Notepad as the program you wish to use. When using this any request to sites that you have blocked will send the request back to your computer.
Enter the IP address you located earlier, followed by the name of the site (one at a time) in which you are blocking. You will have to type in this address twice, aggravating but important to assure you type in the right address for the site you are blocking, the format for this is once with the domain name and once using the www address. After completing these steps save the file. Once you are done check to assure the site has been properly blocked.
